Le nom des minéraux

Introduction

Nommer un minéral, ce n’est pas seulement lui coller une étiquette savante. C’est raconter une petite histoire : celle d’une couleur, d’un lieu, d’une découverte, d’un chimiste, d’un souverain, d’une racine grecque ou même d’un malentendu linguistique. En minéralogie, la nomenclature sert d’abord à éviter la confusion. Quand un géologue français, un collectionneur japonais et un laboratoire canadien parlent de “vanadinite”, ils doivent désigner le même minéral, avec une composition et une structure bien définies. C’est cette exigence de précision qui explique le rôle central de l’International Mineralogical Association, notamment de sa Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification, souvent abrégée IMA-CNMNC (IMA-CNMNC, The New IMA List of Minerals, mise à jour régulièrement ; Nickel & Grice, The Canadian Mineralogist, 1998).

Origines des noms des minéraux

Avant de comprendre les noms les plus étranges, il faut repartir d’une idée simple : un nom de minéral naît presque toujours d’un indice jugé important au moment de sa découverte. Les premiers critères étaient très concrets : la couleur, l’éclat, la dureté, le lieu où l’on trouvait la pierre, ou l’usage qu’on en faisait. Plus tard, avec la chimie et la cristallographie, les noms ont aussi commencé à refléter la composition chimique ou la structure du minéral. Cette évolution est bien décrite dans les ouvrages de référence comme An Introduction to the Rock-Forming Minerals de Deer, Howie et Zussman, ainsi que dans le Handbook of Mineralogy de la Mineralogical Society of America.

Les noms liés à l’apparence sont parmi les plus intuitifs. L’azurite, par exemple, doit son nom à son bleu profond, associé à l’azur ; cette racine a voyagé par le persan et l’arabe avant d’entrer dans les langues européennes (Mindat.org, fiche “Azurite”). La chlorite vient du grec chloros, “vert”, en raison de sa couleur fréquente. L’hématite, elle, vient du grec haima, “sang”, non parce que le cristal est toujours rouge en surface, mais parce que sa poudre peut prendre une teinte rouge-brun très caractéristique (Mindat.org, fiche “Hematite”). On voit ici le raisonnement des anciens observateurs : avant les analyses chimiques modernes, l’œil, la trace et la couleur étaient les premiers outils d’identification .

Quand les lieux deviennent des noms

Un autre réflexe très humain consiste à nommer une chose d’après l’endroit où on l’a trouvée. C’est pratique, mémorisable, et cela donne parfois aux minéraux un parfum de voyage. Pour comprendre cette logique, il faut imaginer les naturalistes des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles recevant des échantillons venus de mines lointaines : rattacher un minéral à une région permettait de l’ancrer dans une réalité géographique .

La bauxite tire ainsi son nom des Baux-de-Provence, où elle fut décrite au XIXe siècle par Pierre Berthier (Encyclopaedia Britannica, entrée “bauxite”). L’andalousite renvoie à l’Andalousie, même si l’histoire exacte de sa provenance initiale a été discutée par les minéralogistes (Handbook of Mineralogy). La labradorite vient du Labrador, région du Canada où cette variété de feldspath a été identifiée, célèbre pour ses reflets irisés appelés labradorescence (Mindat.org, fiche “Labradorite”). Plus discrète mais amusante pour les francophones, la cummingtonite doit son nom à Cummington, dans le Massachusetts ; le nom prête parfois à sourire en anglais moderne, mais il est simplement géographique (Mindat.org, fiche “Cummingtonite”).

Les minéraux qui honorent des personnes

Une fois que la minéralogie devient une science organisée, les noms servent aussi à rendre hommage. Le raisonnement est alors comparable à celui utilisé en biologie pour certaines espèces : on immortalise une personne qui a contribué à la science, à la collecte d’échantillons ou au financement de recherches. Cela donne des noms qui sont de petites plaques commémoratives minérales.

La goethite honore Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, plus connu comme écrivain que comme scientifique, mais passionné par la nature et les minéraux (Mindat.org, fiche “Goethite”). La smithsonite porte le nom de James Smithson, chimiste et minéralogiste britannique, également célèbre pour avoir légué sa fortune à l’origine de la Smithsonian Institution (Smithsonian Institution Archives ; Mindat.org, fiche “Smithsonite”). La moissanite rend hommage à Henri Moissan, chimiste français prix Nobel, qui étudia notamment des cristaux de carbure de silicium trouvés dans une météorite (Mindat.org, fiche “Moissanite”). La dolomite rappelle Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu, géologue français dont le nom est aussi attaché aux Dolomites italiennes (Encyclopaedia Britannica, entrée “dolomite”).

Les minéralogistes eux-mêmes sont souvent honorés. La haüyne porte le nom de René Just Haüy, considéré comme l’un des pères de la cristallographie moderne (Mindat.org, fiche “Haüyne”). La beudantite rend hommage à François Sulpice Beudant, minéralogiste français. La bournonite honore Jacques Louis de Bournon, autre figure importante de la minéralogie européenne (Handbook of Mineralogy). Dans ces cas, le nom ne décrit pas directement la pierre : il inscrit le minéral dans une histoire humaine de la science.

Les noms inspirés par la chimie

Avec l’essor de la chimie, les minéraux ont commencé à être nommés selon les éléments qu’ils contiennent. Le raisonnement devient plus scientifique : le nom sert à signaler une composition caractéristique. Cela ne veut pas dire qu’il résume toute la formule chimique, mais il donne un indice précieux.

La vanadinite contient du vanadium ; son nom indique donc immédiatement un lien avec cet élément (Mindat.org, fiche “Vanadinite”). La chromite est un oxyde riche en chrome, la cuprite un oxyde de cuivre, la molybdénite un sulfure de molybdène, et la thorite contient du thorium (Handbook of Mineralogy). L’uraninite, anciennement appelée pechblende dans certaines traditions minières, est célèbre pour sa richesse en uranium et son rôle historique dans les recherches sur la radioactivité (Encyclopaedia Britannica, entrée “uraninite”). Ici, la nomenclature devient un outil pédagogique : même sans connaître la formule exacte, le nom met le lecteur sur la piste de la composition.

Traditions antiques, mythes et vieux mots

Certains noms sont beaucoup plus anciens que la minéralogie moderne. Pour les comprendre, il faut se rappeler que les pierres ont longtemps été associées à des croyances, des usages médicaux ou des symboles. Les noms ont donc parfois survécu à des idées que la science a abandonnées.

L’améthyste vient du grec amethystos, souvent interprété comme “qui protège de l’ivresse”. Les Grecs associaient cette pierre violette à la sobriété, même si aucune propriété de ce genre n’existe évidemment au sens scientifique (Encyclopaedia Britannica, entrée “amethyst”). La magnétite serait liée à Magnesia, nom de régions antiques associées à des pierres attirant le fer ; son histoire se mêle à celle des premières observations du magnétisme (Mindat.org, fiche “Magnetite”). Le cinabre, minerai rouge de mercure, possède un nom très ancien, passé par le grec kinnabari et le latin cinnabaris, et fut utilisé comme pigment malgré sa toxicité (Encyclopaedia Britannica, entrée “cinnabar”). Ces noms montrent que la nomenclature conserve la mémoire des usages anciens, même lorsque notre compréhension scientifique a changé.

Variations orthographiques selon les langues

Quand les noms circulent d’une langue à l’autre, ils changent parfois de forme. Le raisonnement est simple : chaque langue adapte les mots à sa prononciation, à ses accents et à ses habitudes savantes. Cette adaptation peut donner l’impression d’une différence importante, alors qu’il s’agit souvent du même minéral.

“Hematite” en anglais devient “hématite” en français, avec un accent conforme à l’orthographe française. “Sphalerite” devient “sphalérite”. “Celestine” ou “celestite” en anglais correspond souvent à “célestine” en français ; l’usage peut varier selon les contextes, même si l’espèce minérale est bien définie (Mindat.org, fiches correspondantes). Un cas plus général concerne le soufre : l’anglais américain écrit “sulfur”, tandis que l’anglais britannique a longtemps utilisé “sulphur”, et le français dit “soufre” ; l’IUPAC recommande aujourd’hui “sulfur” en anglais scientifique international (IUPAC, Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, 2005). Dans les échanges scientifiques, ces différences doivent être connues pour éviter les faux problèmes de traduction.

Les noms étranges, drôles ou trompeurs

La nomenclature minéralogique a aussi ses curiosités. Pour les apprécier, il faut distinguer le rire moderne de l’origine réelle du nom : un nom peut sembler drôle aujourd’hui sans avoir été choisi pour cela. La dickite, par exemple, est un minéral du groupe de la kaolinite nommé d’après Allan Brugh Dick, et non d’après une plaisanterie anglophone (Mindat.org, fiche “Dickite”). La painite, longtemps considérée comme l’un des minéraux les plus rares au monde, porte le nom d’Arthur C. D. Pain, gemmologue britannique ; son nom sonne comme “pain”, douleur, en anglais, mais il s’agit bien d’un patronyme (Mindat.org, fiche “Painite”). La coffinite, minéral uranifère, honore le géologue Reuben Clare Coffin ; en anglais, “coffin” signifie cercueil, ce qui donne au nom une tonalité involontairement macabre (Mindat.org, fiche “Coffinite”). Ces exemples rappellent que les noms scientifiques voyagent parfois dans des langues où ils prennent des résonances inattendues.

Le rôle de l’IMA dans l’unification des noms

Face à cette richesse, on pourrait croire que tout est permis. En réalité, la création d’un nom est aujourd’hui très encadrée. L’IMA-CNMNC examine les nouvelles espèces minérales proposées, vérifie leur composition, leur structure cristalline, leur originalité et la pertinence du nom proposé. L’objectif est d’éviter qu’un même minéral porte plusieurs noms ou qu’un nom désigne plusieurs réalités différentes (IMA-CNMNC, Procedures and guidelines on mineral nomenclature, 2023).

Cette standardisation ne supprime pas l’histoire des noms, mais elle met de l’ordre. Un nom ancien peut être conservé s’il correspond à une espèce valide ; il peut aussi être abandonné s’il désigne une variété, un mélange ou un terme commercial. C’est important pour les chercheurs, mais aussi pour les musées, les enseignants, les collectionneurs et le commerce des gemmes.1

Conclusion

La nomenclature des minéraux est un mélange fascinant de science, de langue et d’histoire. Certains noms parlent de couleur, comme azurite ou chlorite ; d’autres de lieux, comme bauxite ou labradorite ; d’autres encore de savants, comme goethite, haüyne ou moissanite. Les noms peuvent être antiques, chimiques, honorifiques, parfois drôles malgré eux. Mais derrière cette diversité, l’enjeu reste le même : permettre à tous de parler précisément du même objet naturel. Grâce aux règles de l’IMA et aux bases de référence comme Mindat.org, le Handbook of Mineralogy, l’Encyclopaedia Britannica et les recommandations de l’IUPAC, la minéralogie conserve la poésie des noms tout en renforçant leur fiabilité scientifique.
